WHO'S THAT KNOCKING Pajo 1968 Drag City : 2006 [Buy it]
I've always liked Dave Pajo; he's got a great track record -- any CV that includes Slint, Palace Brothers, Stereolab, Royal Trux, and Tortoise is aces with me. We shall not mention Zwan -- although I did get the chance to interview Pajo right after Zwan broke up, and the sense of relief at being back in his element that Pajo radiated that night is difficult to overstate.
Under various guises -- Papa M, Aerial M, and his own name -- Pajo has also released many essentially solo albums that blend noodly, pastoral post-rock and folk. These tend to be solid from front to back, but, in the typically subtle Pajo fashion, don't contain any one song that's particularly badass. But with his new album 1968, Pajo bucks the trend -- the album's opening song, "Who's that Knocking", is *sooooooooooo* badass. Like, "make all your friends listen to it, play it multiple times a day and often back-to-back" badass. A supple five-minute wave of spiritual intrigue and Oedipal anxiety, "Who's that Knocking" starts at a magisterial plod and ramps up to a frictionless glide festooned with fluid guitar accents. The pivot between these two sections is one of those moments that can make you audibly gasp and reach for the rewind button. Of course, the rest of the album is great; but finally, Pajo has that one song you'll use to turn the uninitiated onto his music instantly.Labels: brian
