It was one of those weeks when I felt really pessimistic about everything. Illness had me trapped in the house, devolving into a Skinner rat. I was subjected to erratic stimuli: Sleep; watch Israel bomb Lebanon. Sleep; watch Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. That week I was on the phone at godforsaken hours, arguing about the Black Panther Party and the Prague Spring. That week the papers were full of a new shocking statistic: 14,000 Iraqi civilians killed this year, a statistic that revealed the eerie numerology of Bushite America and gave us something to talk about with like-minded friends.

Is it any wonder I might have felt a little apocalyptic? Propped up in a chair, I played the Chemical Brothers and imagined myself with a bullhorn, calling people out of their houses: Get up, stand up, fuckers! Bad shit is happening. People, America's got its foot in your head! I wanted to be a soldier, taking up arms, taking back the streets. And here comes Mos Def's little brother Anwar, name-checking the global community from Slovakia to Ghetto World: Stand up! Stand up! People, there's a war going on outside.

Anwar's calling to his soldiers and I'm thinking about the Panthers patrolling the streets of Oakland. Then I think how none of my leftish friends could even fire a gun. Who would the soldiers be? Maybe the end-timers, the ones who pray for war in the Middle East to bring cleansing fire to the godless world. These people are ready for apocalypse, with their stockpiled food and their weapons caches, while the rest of us are still sitting around waiting for democracy to happen. Maybe the Black Gangster Disciples and the Latin Kings would want to march, but I'm not sure how their plans would correlate with my messianic vision.

I didn't need to be a Christ, not even a Shabbatai Tzvi. I just wanted something to happen. Why is it things happen everywhere else and not here? We are a nation of eyes and mouths, but no legs and arms.
Sure one can hide, but there's a world outside
Must be pretty safe under a fireproof blanket
or sitting on your fat suburban ass watching CNN, like me.
There's a war going on outside
and you can't run, you can't hide
Anwar says, All my people march. Maybe I'll see you in DC on August 12. New York protest numbers have been shit lately, what's with you lazy cosmopolitans? Midwest turns it out, time and again. People get ready, get on the damn bus. Meet me for biscuits after the rally.

Read caveats about the ANSWER Coalition here.

While away the merry hours by leafing through the FBI's FOIA library. None of the COINTELPRO stuff is available online, but you can see Wilt Chamberlain's files. Our tax dollars at work, whoo-hoo!
