While not the official sentiment of the Moistworks Brooklyn bureau (nor its readership), hopefully the separation anxiety was mutual.

Funny thing about the city is how quickly hairline fractures quickly widen into chasms. Well-intentioned phone calls to family go undialed. Plans with friends fall through. Next thing you know, months have roared past without communication, time as oblivious as the train tracks blurring beneath your feet on the daily commute.

Close my eyes, and think not of the water overhead nor under the bridge. Thoughts drift back to a place that exists only in my mind, where there is far more open space and illusions of more time to have all those conversations, spend more time with the family. To escape from a past that's unfinished while also imagining a future just as shapeless and pressed for time.

"The years teach much that the days will never know," to paraphrase Emerson. Not to mention how much they will also forget.
