Live on KCRW

A warm welcome to readers of Alex Ross's blog, and a brief word of introduction: Moistworks is an audioblog that ex-AFL star James Morris started in April of 2004. A year later, it was hijacked by seven other writers, who seduced James into posting some of their favorite songs and tricked him into finding and photoshopping the accompanying illustrations. (I especially like the one of Otis Redding as a cowpoke.) We update Monday through Friday, putting up all sorts of music and as much text as the occasion seems to call for. Mac users can download tracks to their desktops or MP3 players by holding the alt/option key down while clicking on song titles. PC users can simply right-click. We like hearing from our readers, so post a comment or drop us a line.

Above, a few songs about feelin' low & gettin' high. Ella Fitzgerald's was recorded with Chick Webb's band on April 7, 1936. (It's also available on the German compilation"Dope & Glory: Reefer Songs der 30er & 40er Jahre.") Evan Dando and Juliana Hatfield's acoustic "Drug Buddy" was recorded for Morning Becomes Eclectic, sometime in the early 1990s. It's a heartbreaker.

Below, a few songs for my friend Uruviel; Nina Simone covering George Harrison, and posing the musical question "what good does it do/if I ain't got you?" + two versions of Bob Dylan's magnum opus, recorded forty years ago next week, just a few month's after U's own DOB.
